AnyCopy is a clipboard manager for that it simplifies and enhances your digital workflow by automatically storing and archiving all of your copied items. It is a valuable tool for anyone who frequently browses articles, reads tons of information every day.
Managing copied items efficiently is a crucial part of our daily smartphone usage. Constantly copying and pasting information from one app to another can become tedious and time-consuming, especially when trying to manage multiple copied items. In my redesign project for AnyCopy, I sought to find a solution to this problem by improving the app's usability and enhancing the overall user experience.
The founder initiated and requested a complete redesign of the app, which had not been updated since 2015. In order to facilitate a prompt update by the engineering team, my first step in the redesign process was to adhere to most default settings of Android Material Design 3.
AnyCopy simplifies and enhances your digital workflow by automatically storing and archiving all of your copied items. This means you can easily refer back to them later without worrying about losing important information or struggling to find a particular app to paste them. The seamless integration of the auto backup feature into the app allows you to focus on your work while AnyCopy takes care of organizing your clips. It is a valuable tool for anyone who frequently browses articles, reads tons of information every day, and takes notes often.
The problem with the previous version of the app was that it lacked a cohesive design system, with outdated design elements and styles that had not been updated since 2015. This made it difficult for the app to keep up with the latest design trends in the user interface.
I built new design system, the typography, icons, and buttons, to match the latest Material Design 3 styles. I also made sure that these elements were consistent throughout the app to create a harmonious and cohesive design.
I have implemented the Dynamic Color system, a key feature of Material Design 3, in the app. This system automatically adjusts the theme colors based on the user's wallpaper or the app's theme, ensuring a cohesive and visually pleasing experience.
The previous version of the app had a confused hierarchy of sorting notes, making it difficult for users to locate specific items. Additionally, certain features were hidden within the settings menu, requiring users to manually search for them without any indication that they were available. This resulted in many users missing out on key functionality of the app.
To improve the readability and accessibility of copied items, I redesigned the note card layout to include a larger font size, clearer spacing, and a resource logo for easy navigation. The new design not only enhances the visual appeal but also provides a more functional user experience, enabling users to quickly glance at their copied items.
I restructured the setting menu hierarchy by grouping related settings together, separating function settings from system settings, and creating a clear and organized structure.
Features and pages were independent of each other, with no cross-reference among relevant features. Additionally, each user flow had only one starting point, leading to confusion and difficulties for users. These issues not only impacted the user experience but also required a high level of maintenance to keep the app functioning smoothly.
I restructured the create page with a clear and intuitive design that prioritizes previously hidden functions, such as the private lock and tags, while highlighting key features like the auto-saving function. With the addition of more icon buttons, users can easily manage their saved content and ensure the safety and quick retrieval of all copied items.
There were two separate versions of AnyCopy available on the Google Play Store, one for free users and another for premium members. To access premium features, users had to download a completely new app and manually transfer all their data, which created a significant barrier to upgrading. This dual-version system also created a high maintenance workload for the development team.
To reduce confusion and maintenance efforts, putting premium options on the free version not only created a seamless user experience but also met business needs by streamlining operations and promoting the app more effectively. This move has resulted in a significant increase in user engagement and retention while reducing development and maintenance costs.
The result of the redesign is significant. By completely restructuring the app and improving the navigation and organization of all features and functions, users can now enjoy a more intuitive and streamlined experience. The implementation of a new design system has allowed the app to keep up with the latest design trends and eliminate any inconsistencies in the user interface, resulting in a more cohesive and unified app.
Updating the app to adhere to MD3 design principles is essential in keeping up with the latest trends in design and maintaining a competitive edge on Google Play. As the first stage of the redesign project comes to a close, the development team is excited to receive user feedback and suggestions to make the app even more user-friendly.
The next step is to continue identifying user needs and incorporating them into the design to enhance the overall user experience. With a more cohesive and intuitive design, the app will not only meet business needs but also exceed user expectations.
